Dividend Breaking 1000s Worksheet
Reminders & Tips for - Dividend Breaking 1000s worksheet:
- A Reminder: you should already know your division table to 100.
- Tips: Fist we "chip off" 1000 (or 2000, 3000...) times the divisor from the dividend, and then deal with the rest.
- Therefore, the quotient of the first dividend-chip (in red in worksheet below) must be divisible by 1000 (i.e. = 1000, 2000, 3000...).
- Comment: Essentially, this is how all division, including the long division, is done.
- Example 1: 7910 ÷ 7 = ?
- We "chip off" (1000 × 7) 7000 from 7910
(we can't chip off 2000 × 7 = 14000 because that's bigger than 7910) - So, now we have this situation: (7000 + 910) ÷ 7
- Following with: 7000÷7 + 910÷7
- 7000÷7 = 1000 (and is divisible by 1000)
- and 910÷7 should be solved according to Dividend Breaking 100s Worksheet
- Example 2: 8124 ÷ 4 = ?
- We "chip off" (2000 × 4) 8000 from 8124
(2000 × 4 is closer to 8124 than 1000 × 4 = 4000, and 3000 × 4 = 12000 is bigger than 8124) - So, now we have this situation: (8000 + 124) ÷ 4
- Following with: 8000÷4 + 124÷2
- 8000÷4 = 2000 (and is divisible by 1000)
- and 124÷4 should be solved according to Dividend Breaking 100s Worksheet
- Example 3: 9597 ÷ 3 = ?
- We "chip off" (3000 × 3) 9000 from 597
(3000 × 3 is closer to 9597 than 1000 or 2000 × 3, and 4000 × 3 = 12000 is bigger than 9597) - So, now we have this situation: (9000 + 93) ÷ 3
- Following with: 9000÷3 + 597÷3
- 9000÷3 = 3000 (and is divisible by 1000)
- and 597÷3 should be solved according to Dividend Breaking 100s Worksheet
